Objectives and Approach

A direct transfer of knowledge, experience and skills to local centres – this is the most effective form of support. EurAsia Heart Foundation aims to instruct, encourage and assist local specialist professionals on site, and to verify the way in which they apply what they have learned. This improves their existing skills and allows them to acquire new expertise and abilities. Any topics that are relevant to improving the treatment of patients will be discussed. The most difficult procedures will be carried out on site by the EurAsia Heart Foundation specialists themselves – if such an intervention is requested or indicated.
EurAsia Heart Foundation cooperates with leading centres worldwide so that it can cope with the growing demand.
In the first few years, this work focussed mainly on cardiology and cardiovascular surgery in children, young people and adults. Increasingly, however, the enquiries received from foreign centres also relate to other specialist areas, such as gastric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics and oncology.

In brief: EurAsia Heart Foundation offers one-to-one advanced training on site to local teams – at home, on their own equipment, during their treatment of their own patients, in their own clinics.

The aim of this cooperation is to:

  • Reduce the mortality rate during surgery.
  • Lower the rate of complications during and after surgery, and thus reduce the number of patients suffering consequential harm.
  • Expand the spectrum of therapies and diagnostics so that more patients receive the treatment that is appropriate to them.
  • Demonstrate cost efficiency in the treatment of patients with cardiac disease.
  • Promote international collaboration.
  • Organise and direct research and teaching programmes within the framework of international multi-centre studies, and guarantee implementation in line with the guidelines.

Main characteristics

Local training under the prevailing local conditions, quality control, follow-up on early and intermediate results as well as establishing local self-sustainability are the specific features of the EurAsia Heart Foundation.

On-site education: four conditions

  • Local authorities and institutions have to be involved and have to support the collaboration.
  • Collaboration has to be based on local infrastructure with the aim to further develop the existing infrastructure.
  • The main emphasis of collaboration has to be on training and improving the skills of local teams.
  • A local project has to be established based on long-term collaboration agreements.

Quality control

  • The achievements of the EurAsia Heart Foundation as well as that of the local collaboration partners will be analyzed using the EuroScore system.
  • This system includes a risk-adjusted analysis of the whole treatment and results achieved.

  • Partnership with EurAsia Heart Foundation incorporates a positive long-term effect.
  • Education and training provision is set up locally, which means that the hospitals continue to achieve better performance, even when the Foundation is not itself present on the ground.
