A close cooperation was established a long time ago, between St. Marina University in Bulgaria and hospitals in Switzerland, for example, the University Hospital Bern for renal transplant,Kantonsspital St. Gallen for sleeping disorders, or the University Hospital of Zürich for Pulmonary Hypertension.

In Cardiac Surgery, close cooperation established with Professor Plamen Pananyotov, Head of the Department for Cardiac Surgery, mainly in the field of Myocardio Protection, neurology complications as well as in surgery of hypertrophic-obstructive cardiomyopathy.

The clinic in Varna has further interest in the “ Infection prevention protocol”. It practically eliminates superficial and deep infections after median sternotomy. Also in the the treatment of aneurysms of the descending thoracic -abdominal aorta.

(For further information look at (www.Eurasiaheart.com under Science and Research”).

In the first analysis it was found that when infection prevention protocol was followed
deep infections of the bones could be eliminated completely.
The hospital couldn`t undertake all the targets of the protocol due to the fact that not all of the medication or substances in the protocol are used in Bulgaria. For example, Chlorhexidin, which is used by us for disinfection.

During a visit, lectures were given, protocols exchanged and surgical procedures done. The cooperation with St Maria University Clinic will be continued in the field of difficult heart surgery procedures as well as in the field of prevention of wound infection after Median sternotomy.

The Cardiac Department of Bulgaria is taking part in an ongoing Multicentre Study for Infection Prevention. This study has been carried out in the Klinik im Park, the AKH in Vienna and different clinics in Russia.

Up to now EurAsia Heart Foundation has visited Varna twice, a visiting professor Plamen Panayotov has also visited Klinik im Park.
